Some free start-up advice...
Altus Alliance, a local business consulting company held a workshop for local start-ups back in January. For those that missed it, they have helpfully posted the presentation on their site: CEO Briefing with Mark Leslie. Most of the information will be old hat for anyone who has been through one start-up at the C level, but for everyone else the concepts will be enlightening. If you are thinking about starting a company it is a good read. Along with Startup and The Nudist on the Late Shift (my two personal favorites).

The headline you DON'T want over your picture
Dot-Con Job is the headline over Naveen Jain's picture on the cover of the Sunday Seattle times. Generally I find local media quite unfriendly to business. They tend to focus on the negative to sell papers. Unfortunately in this case I must agree. Due to a two year intensive campaign by the Seattle Times, they have gotten access to documents previously sealed by a court. This is good journalism. For better or worse, now it is clear that Seattle has its own Enron. Martha has nothing on Naveen. The documents show a pattern of deception and mis-representation of information to analysts and investors (Martha only traded on inside information on ANOTHER stock, not her own). Read the articles. You will find a case study on being caught up in the moment with personal greed gone wild (by everyone involved, investors, investment bankers, the company, accountants, etc.). Infospace was a product of the times. Investors wanted to believe the impossible was possible and Naveen sold the dream very well. Selling the dream is not criminal. Lying about progress toward the dream is. Covering up missteps along the path is. Creating a pyramid scheme is. Unfortunately from this series it seems that Naveen and some of the others crossed the line.
I don't expect this to be the end, I expect it to be the beginning of a new chapter. The Seattle Times would like nothing more than to have an Enron to report on locally. They will create one if they have to.

Brad Silverberg on the ABCs of a venture business.
Brad Silverberg, a partner at Ignition, has started contributing a tech column to Business Week. Here is the first: The ABCs of Tech Success. It borrows heavilly from Rich Tong and John Zagula's Marketing Playbook, which everyone with a start-up should read.

March 15 technology showcase
this one looks to be fun. I will be there.
Martin: On March 15 the Northwest Entrepreneur Network is holding its Technology Showcase, featuring 35 to 40 disruptive technologies from 9 Northwest research institutions. The full description of the event is below. If you know of entrepreneurs who should be attending this event to find their next cool piece of technology, please forward them this email. You’re welcome to attend as well, of course. With this many technologies in town, we want to make sure we have a good turn-out! Connie

From Start to Success
More than $2
BILLION a year is spent on research at
Pacific Northwest universities and institutions.
Come see some of the results of that research investment on March 15, 2005. At the Northwest Entrepreneur Network’s 2005 Technology Showcase & Networking Night, you’ll see 35 to 40 licensing-ready technologies that have tremendous start-up potential. These “up-start” technologies—in biotech, drugs/medical devices, information technology, and material sciences—represent a leap in innovation and vision.
It takes a creative and experienced entrepreneur to imagine the product platforms, build out the management team, sell the concept to investors, and bring these technologies to market.
What will we be showcasing? Here’s a sample:
- University of Washington (heart monitor, tissue engineering)
- Washington State University (Piezoelectric microengines)
- Pacific Northwest Research Institute (genotyping for disease prediction, diabetes treatment)
- Pacific Northwest National Laboratory/Battelle (transgenic plants, magnetic resonance spectroscopy)
- University of British Columbia (scodaforesis, wideband antennas)
- Simon Fraser University (microfluidic device, photochromic polymers)
- University of Victoria (network security)
- Oregon Health & Science University (drug therapies, video sensor software)
- University of Idaho (neural networks, immune stimulants)
How long would it take—and how much would it cost?—for you to go to all these research institutions to see these same technologies? On March 15, we make it easy for you.

More $$ in northwest for energy entrepreneurs
The Northwest Energy Effeciency Alliance comes up with $100M more for energy effeciency projects.
Northwest Power Industry Commits $100 Million for Efficiency
The Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance announced last week that it will receive $20 million each year over the next five years to support its efforts to increase energy efficiency in the region. The funds will come from the Bonneville Power Administration, electric utilities, and public benefit funds—state funds generated through a fee on electricity to support public benefits such as renewable energy and energy efficiency. The $100 million investment will support market-based energy efficiency programs throughout Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington.
Since the Alliance began in late 1996, energy efficiency efforts in the Northwest have saved the region an estimated 130 megawatts of electricity through 2003. The Alliance programs encourage appliance manufacturers and retailers to make and sell more efficient products, encourage commercial building designers to adopt practices that yield high-performance buildings, and promote new and innovative energy-saving technologies to industries in the Northwest. By 2010, the Alliance and related efforts are expected to save enough electricity to offset the need for two new power plants in the region, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 2 million tons. See the Alliance press release.
They have been known to fund early stage start ups as well. If you have a business plan around energy effeciency, send it over!
